Whilst respecting the building’s original character, Ditt Officemakers, in collaboration with TANK Architects, transformed the entrance, lift lobbies and communal areas of the multi-tenant building ‘de Vyzel’ into a contemporary and welcoming environment.

Project Case
De Vyzel, situated at 20 Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam, is a distinctive building from the 1960s with a rich architectural history. The aim of this project was to give the communal areas including the entrance, lift lobbies and cycle storage a contemporary look without detracting from the building’s original character. In collaboration with TANK Architects, a design concept was developed that embraces and enhances the qualities of the existing building. By combining historical elements with modern interventions, a welcoming and future-proof environment has been created that meets the expectations of today’s users.
A defining feature of the design is the way in which existing and new elements are interwoven. Materials such as steel and natural stone, which were already part of the building, have been retained and complemented with warm wooden wall panelling. These additions create a refined and inviting appearance and complement the wooden window frames on the façade of the upper floors. The interior design concept is inspired by a patchwork approach, combining characteristic details from the 1960s with contemporary architecture and interior design. The collaboration with TANK Architects resulted in a carefully balanced experience in which history, functionality and aesthetics come together. In addition, the addition of shower facilities in the cycle shed contributes to sustainable commuting and encourages users to cycle more often.
