Project Case
Svalner Atlas is based in the former headquarters of Amsterdam’s municipal tram company on Stadhouderskade, a listed building dating from the 1920s with a distinctive Amsterdam School character. The challenge was to create a contemporary workplace that meets the needs of a modern organisation without compromising the building’s monumental value and architectural identity. The design strengthens the connection between past and present by translating the principles of the Amsterdam School, rhythm, geometry, materiality and rich detailing. into a contemporary interior. The result is an inspiring workplace where focus, interaction and everyday use come together within a characterful and future-proof setting.
The identity of Svalner Atlas is expressed through a carefully considered layer of bespoke design, materiality and reuse. Inspired by the design language of the Amsterdam School, rhythm, geometry and detailing were consistently translated into bespoke elements, tiling and custom-designed rugs, each with its own pattern and colour identity for every floor. New design classics were combined with reupholstered existing furniture, allowing sustainability and character to go hand in hand. Preserving the building’s listed structure was a key consideration throughout. By keeping structural alterations to a minimum, its historic qualities remained intact. The different colour worlds. Earth, Green, Water and Sky, enhance wayfinding and the overall experience within the building, giving each floor its own distinctive story. The result is a workplace where heritage, sustainability and contemporary use come together naturally.
