Ditt Officemakers created a new entrance for De Smederij in Amsterdam on behalf of the developer Hines. The freestanding steel staircase connects two storeys and serves as a contemporary nod to the industrial history of this listed building.
Project Case
For De Smederij, a distinctive building on the NDSM site in Amsterdam, Ditt Officemakers created a new entrance for the developer Hines. At the heart of the design is a freestanding staircase that connects the two storeys and organises the flow through the building in a natural way. Even during the pitch, we explored various design options, after which the chosen concept was carefully developed and implemented whilst retaining the original design intent.
The robust staircase structure, constructed from exposed steel, pays homage to the building’s industrial history, in which steelworking once played a significant role. Wooden steps add warmth and texture, whilst Corten steel accents and generous planting create an inviting and contemporary look. The staircase has been deliberately kept separate from the listed building structure, thereby fully preserving its historic character. In addition, the existing toilet block was modernised and refurbished. The result is an entrance hall that seamlessly blends the past and the present.
